The energy transition and the increasing connection of energy and mobility pose new challenges. Against this background, we carry out various studies on behalf of customers. In addition to studies on the design of energy storage, development of special safety and control concepts and studies on the effects of project-specific operating conditions on battery characteristics (depending on the application), this includes studies on the development of modern electrical networks and integration of innovative energy management systems.
In the region of Unterfranken, we prepared a site analysis for the integration of a rotating phase shifter for the dynamic control of the reactive power deficit or surplus with strongly fluctuating solar and wind supply. In case of a short circuit, the rotating phase shifter guarantees the grid stability.
The contract for this study was awarded by TenneT TSO GmbH and ALSTOM Power GmbH as part of the modernization of the substation Bergrheinfeld West. This was the first time a phase shifter was used in Germany.
Grid stability systems put the electrical supply network in a (n-1)-safe state after critical faults. Since currently the capacity of all available market and reserve power plants in Germany is not sufficient for this purpose, the need for curative redispatch should be met by grid stability systems. On behalf of TenneT TSO GmbH, we therefore wrote a study on various available technologies for grid stabilization, their technical and economic requirements and the associated risks.
For Continental AG, we developed a study for the design and engineering of an energy storage unit made of lithium-ion batteries in combination with a diesel generator system. The background was peak load management at a large industrial consumer.
Due to its fast response times, the battery storage is ideal for peak load reduction, the so-called “Peak Shaving”. The use of emergency generators additionally guarantees a uniform utilization of the electrical supply network by cutting peak loads in the long term or in the event of a memory failure. Thus, the industrial electricity customer saves the power costs demanded by the grid operator in the case of the heavy load increase, as occurs, for example, when starting up production facilities, during heating or during pumping operations.
